The value of data from orchard to plate

The apple supply chain has many links, from cultivation and harvesting to storage and sales. The Tree 2 Plate project investigates how data can be optimally utilized to make this chain more efficient, sustainable, and transparent. Through improved data exchange and analysis, the project aims to both enhance product quality and strengthen consumer trust.

    Broad knowledge question

How do we maximize the value of data in the apple supply chain?

From orchard to plate, data is collected at various stages. This project explores how this data can be better shared and utilized to increase efficiency, improve sustainability, and ensure product quality. The focus is on data exchange throughout the entire supply chain: cultivation, harvesting, sorting, storage, packaging, and marketing.

    Approach

From data collection to actionable insights

Work is underway to develop a data exchange layer and a dashboard to make relevant information accessible to various links in the supply chain. Additionally, the project explores how the value of data can contribute to adoption within the sector. It focuses on collaboration with growers to collect and apply practical data. Training and support for growers play an important role in this process.

    Goal

More efficient and transparent apple supply chain

This project tests and validates the interoperability of data and demonstrates the benefits it offers for growers, processors, and retailers. A more efficient and sustainable apple supply chain can lead to better product quality and greater transparency regarding the origin and treatment of apples. By addressing inefficiencies in the chain, the availability and quality of apples are improved.

    Results and reflection

From data collection to practical applications

The project maps out which data is collected at different levels in the supply chain, how this data creates value for other links, and who is willing to pay for it. This process is tested through a proof of concept (POC). Additionally, a data platform and dashboard are developed to make insights accessible.

    Successful:

    • Identification of relevant data within different links of the apple supply chain.

    • Development of a data exchange layer and dashboard to share insights across the chain.

    • Initial steps taken toward the adoption of data-driven decision-making within the sector.

    Lessons learned:

    • Further validation is needed to determine which data is most valuable for different supply chain partners.

    • The practical implementation of data exchange requires close collaboration and training for growers.

    • Financing and ownership of the data remain significant issues within the sector.
