De Nieuwe Ploeg launched at Agrotechniek Holland

Promising innovations deserve more than a successful trial

A robot that performs well in trials does not automatically make it to market. Regulations, funding, insurance or a shortage of skilled workers can prevent promising technologies from being adopted. And these challenges are often beyond the reach of any single organisation.

That is why De Nieuwe Ploeg was officially launched at AgroTechniek Holland. Through eight thematic working groups, the initiative brings together farmers, businesses, research organisations, educational institutions and government bodies to address these challenges.

Turning shared ambitions into action

De Nieuwe Ploeg builds on the Manifest Innovatie voor een toekomstbestendige land- en tuinbouw, which identifies what is needed to move innovations such as robotics, AI and digital technologies beyond development and testing.

De Nieuwe Ploeg provides a structured way to take this ambition forward. Rather than leaving individual organisations to tackle the same barriers independently, the initiative brings relevant parties together to explore possible solutions and next steps. The Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Nature supports this effort.

Robotics takes more than technology

A technology that works is not necessarily ready for widespread adoption. Regulatory approval, financing, insurance, data, training, practical testing and market access all play a role.

Many of these conditions are beyond the control of individual farmers or technology developers. By bringing together expertise, interests and resources, De Nieuwe Ploeg aims to help identify barriers and create opportunities for further progress.

Eight working groups to help innovation move forward

De Nieuwe Ploeg organises its collaboration around eight themes.

  • Future-ready Regulation

  • Stimulating Investment

  • Insuring Innovation

  • Investing in People and Skills

  • Connecting Innovation and Practice

  • Data and Digitalisation

  • Internationalisation

  • Future Outlook 2040

This provides a structured setting in which relevant organisations can explore the next steps needed to address issues such as insurance, training and data exchange.

The first initiatives are taking shape

Insurance is one area where concrete next steps are already being prepared. The Dutch Association of Insurers (Verbond van Verzekeraars) has announced a roundtable involving more than fifty organisations to explore how agricultural innovations can become more insurable.

A detailed plan has also been developed for RoboChallenge 2027, aimed at expanding existing initiatives towards nationwide implementation.

An important step for Handsfree Agrifood

Within NXTGEN Hightech Agrifood, businesses, research organisations and agricultural partners are already working together on robotics, AI and digitalisation. Yet technological development alone is not enough to make innovations widely applicable.

De Nieuwe Ploeg focuses on the wider conditions needed to support adoption. As a participating partner, NXTGEN Hightech Agrifood helps connect technology, agricultural practice and the organisations that can contribute to the next steps.
