Podcast: MosaMatrix on animal-free 3D cell culture

The material cells grow in is usually treated as background: something that holds cells in place while the attention goes to medium composition and cell function.

Jan Hunik and Matthew Baker of MosaMatrix turn that around in a two-part podcast conversation.

MosaMatrix, involved in the Biomed01 and Biomed03 project lines of NXTGEN Hightech Biomed, develops synthetic hydrogels that reconfigure themselves as cells divide, spread and differentiate. The material behaves less like scaffolding and more like tissue. In a two-part conversation on the Smart Biotech Scientist podcast, hosted by David Brühlmann, CEO Jan Hunik and CTO Matthew Baker explain the thinking behind it.

Three insights from the conversation

  1. Stiffness and stress relaxation, not chemical composition alone, determine whether tissue formation actually works.

  2. Being animal-free was never the opening pitch for MosaMatrix; it became the reason customers keep coming back.

  3. MosaMatrix does not validate the hydrogel in-house alone. It is tested by academic and industry partners in consortia, across cell types and culture media. That external testing surfaces variables a single lab does not see. For a programme like ours, that may be the most relevant point.
