Phoenix Alkalina: Dutch Innovation Accelerates Affordable Green Hydrogen Production
VDL Hydrogen Systems, part of the NXTGEN Hightech program, is collaborating with Dutch partners on a promising technological breakthrough: the development of a new generation of alkaline electrolysers. This project, called Phoenix Alkalina, focuses on increasing efficiency and reducing the cost of electrolysis—a crucial technology for producing green hydrogen.
Smarter Designs, Lower Costs
At the heart of the project is the redesign of the electrolyser. Through innovative design choices and advanced material selection, the goal is to achieve higher efficiency and lower production costs. A key focus is the optimization of membranes and electrodes, which together account for approximately 50% of the total cost of an electrolyser.
Collaboration with Magneto: Electrodes of the Future
One of the key partners in the project is Magneto Special Anodes, which is working on a new generation of electrodes. These electrodes will be integrated into the Phoenix Alkalina electrolyser and tested for performance and durability. The results will provide valuable insights for future OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) of electrolyser stacks and strengthen the position of Dutch companies in the rapidly growing hydrogen market.
From Prototype to Large-Scale Production
Thanks to support from the NXTGEN Hightech program, a working 50 kW prototype has already been developed. In 2026, the project will scale up to a 500 kW installation, followed by test setups of up to 15 MW. The ultimate goal is ambitious: the construction of a factory capable of producing 1 GW of electrolysers annually.
Strategic Importance for the Netherlands
The production of green hydrogen is a key focus within the Dutch energy transition. Hydrogen plays a crucial role in sectors that are difficult to electrify, such as heavy industry, aviation, and shipping. By investing in efficient and affordable electrolysis technology, the Netherlands positions itself as a leader in the global hydrogen economy.
The Phoenix Alkalina-project is a prime example of how collaboration between industry, technology, and government can lead to groundbreaking innovations. With this development, VDL—together with the Dutch manufacturing industry—contributes to a sustainable future in which green hydrogen plays a central role.
